Pigment epithelial cell ensheathment of cone outer segments in the retina of the domestic cat.

چکیده
The association between cone outer segments and pigment epithelial cells in the tapetal region of the cat’s retina was studied by both transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Although the cone outer segments do not reach the perikaryal surface of the pigment epithelium they are still closely associated with the apical processes of the pigment epithelium. These processes are leaf-like in shape and ensheath the cone outer segments in a unique way. Each sheath is formed usually by four processes. The base of each process is a broad cytoplasmic sheet which wraps in a spiral of one and a half to two turns in the space above the outer segment’s tip. The processes of each sheath wrap concentrically in this space and form a tunnel whose wall is a t least six laminae thick. Where the outer segment is inserted into the sheath, the thickness of the sheath diminishes to three or four laminae. This is because each process gradually narrows in width and, therefore, makes fewer turns. Since the processes continue to narrow as they extend along the outer segment the completeness of ensheathment gradually diminishes from the tip to the base of the outer segment. The processes finally narrow to pointed tips and some processes of each sheath reach the base of the outer segment.

Comparison of photoreceptor-specific matrix domains in the cat and monkey retinas.
Two lectins, wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) and peanut agglutinin (PNA), were used to compare domains within the interphotoreceptor matrices (IPM) of the cat and monkey, two species where the morphological relationship between the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptors is distinctly different. In the monkey, PNA labeling was heaviest over the cone outer segments and a discrete region ...
متن کاملRetinal detachment in the cat: the pigment epithelial-photoreceptor interface.
Twenty-six cat retinae were surgically detached by injecting fluid into the subretinal space (SRS). The retinae were then studied by light and electron microscopy at detachment intervals ranging from 1/2 hr to 14 months. Degenerative and proliferative changes occur at the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE)-photoreceptor interface very soon after detachment, and the severity of these changes depen...
متن کاملBoth rod and cone disc shedding are related to light onset in the cat.
Nineteen domestic cats were entrained to a 12-hr light/12-hr dark lighting cycle and killed at different times of the cycle. The numbers of rod and cone phagosomes in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) were quantified by light microscopy. The number of both rod and cone phagosomes shows a large increase within 2 hrs after light onset. Thereafter, the phagosome count remains low until the latt...
متن کاملMorphological recovery in the reattached retina.
After experimental retinal detachment in the cat, a number of morphological changes take place in retinal and RPE cells. Following reattachment, the ultrastructural relationship between the photoreceptors and the RPE is re-established, but it does not return to the predetachment state even after short detachment episodes coupled with prolonged recovery periods. All of the reattached retinae sho...
متن کاملOrigin and organization of pigment epithelial apical projections to cones in cat retina.
The apical surface of the retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE) in the cat extend long sheetlike membranes that wrap concentrically above and around cone outer segments forming the cone sheath. The origin and organization of these sheetlike projections were studied in serial sections by electron microscopy. The apical surface of the RPE cells was found to consist of a thin zone of anastomosing...
